It is as if goodness was just second nature to Jayantha.Īlthough Jayantha played the keyboard and was known for it, he had a beautiful voice. Jayantha was never vocal about what he has done for others. If those people did not come up and voiced them, nobody would have known of those. The kind of relationships he had had with these people are amazing. When he passed away, the love and affection came like a downpour. He had been a loving, humble and helpful friend, without making a show of it. It is not about the friends in the field or his musical colleagues. It was only after Jayantha passed away we got to know the true impact he has made on people. "In spite of all his brilliance in terms of his musical abilities, he was a very silent person. In each programme, Jayantha wrote notation and prepared everything. "That was the last programme Jayantha and I did for the band. Wickramasinghe said one moment he felt it the best was when they were doing the TV programme, Leya Saha Laya. Jayantha was always devoted to give nothing but his best." Jayantha was a teetotaller and neither did he smoke. Jayantha would take a look at the notation sheet and immediately put cords, counterparts and give it new colour, bringing out home-truths. That is not something that can be done by everyone who knows music."Įxplaining it further he said, "If a music director or a singer, a novice or even an expert comes with a song for a recording with a music sheet, Jayantha would take that and beautify it. But what most people are not aware of is his composing and his skill to arrange music," revealed Wickramasinghe. "By 1995-96, our band was rebranded as Siha Shakhi and their relationship flourished. I joined and our friendship and our bond became stronger. Leaving the country in 1988 and upon my return in 1991, I was invited by Ananda Perera to join their band Shakthi. ![]() That is when I got to associate him and his family. When I joined Belwood, Jayantha replaced me as the keyboard player. I was with Ananda Perera, the leader of the bands, Siha Shakthi/Shakthi. An emotional Wickramasinghe started, "I met Jayantha for the first time in 1983 or 84. What better person than Sangeeth Wickramasinghe to ask about Jayantha Rathnayake. ![]() We do not feel he ever received the deserved recognition or the appreciation. ![]() Being born as the son of a renowned vocalist and musician and a celebrated star, Jayantha Rathnayake never tried to shine in the light of his father. In a country where music and singing have become a craze, he was never caught in the commercialised insanity. ![]()
